چکیده
We apply an objective statistical analysis to a 6-yr, multiparameter dataset iti an c4l’ort lo tlctic~ibe the spatial dependence and inherent variation of water quality patterns in the lilorida Ray-Whitrwalc*r Hny area. Principal component analysis of 16 water quality parameters collected monthly over a 6-yr period resnlted in live prinr.ipaI COIIIponents (PC) that explained 71.8% of the variance of the original variables. The “organic” coIIIpoIIvIl1 (I’( :,) wils Clllllposed of TN, TON, APA, and TOC; the “inorganic N” component (PCIl) cuntainecl NO2 , NO:, , m~cl NII,‘, the “phytoplankton” component (PC,,,) was made up of turbidity, TP, and Chl a; DO and f~~mprra~urc~ wcrv i~~vvrtiely related (PC,); and salinity was the only parameter included in PC,. A cluster analysis of mean and SI) ol’ I’(: tswrt~w adted in the spatial aggregation of 50 fixed monitoring stations in Florida Bay and Whitewater Ilay into nix ZOIW~~ 01’ similar influence (ZSI) defined as Eastern Florida Bay. Core Florida Bay, Western Florida Bay, (:oot Ilay, 1111~ IIUIW Mu~~yrovc Fringe, and the Outer Mangrove Fringe. Marked differences in physical, chemical, snd biological charnrtcrlwtics awmg ZSI were ill-ustrated by this technique. Comparison of medians and variability of param-tcr vahan ~JNIWI~ %SI allowed large-scale generalizations as to underlying differences in water quality in these regions. Il’or ~xa~nph+ Kantc:rtl IGrida Bay had lower salinity7 TON, TOC, TP, and Chl a than the Core Bay as a function ol’ dil‘l‘cwwc:eri ~II I‘rc~nl~wa~cv inpuls and water residence time. Comparison of medians and variability within ZSI resulted in new I~ypotl~m~~s tm 10 lhe processes generating these internal patterns. For example, the Core Bay had very high TON, ‘I’()(:, a11r1 NI f., ’ ~~llll~l!ll~~d~~~~ilS but very low NO,~ 9 leadiig us to postulate the inhibition of nitrification via CO production by ‘I’()( i ph~hlysia. We believe that this simple, objective approach to spatial analysis of fixed-station monitoring data~h will arid twlcn~i~bi and managers in the interpretation of factors underlying the observed parameter dislribulion patterns. We alrc~ mprcl tbal this approach will be useful in focussing attention on specific spatial areas of concern and in gvnvraring IWW ideas COI hypothesis testing.

Spatial patterning of water quality in Biscayne Bay, Florida as a function of land use and water management.
An objective classification analysis was performed on a water quality data set from 25 sites collected monthly during 1994-2003. The water quality parameters measured included: TN, TON, DIN, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, TP, SRP, TN:TP ratio, TOC, DO, CHL A, turbidity, salinity and temperature. Based on this spatial analysis, Biscayne Bay was divided into five zones having similar water quality characteris...
متن کاملStudy on Spatiotemporal Variability of Water Quality Parameters in Florida Bay Using Remote Sensing
Florida Bay is the other important waterbody of South Florida that is a dynamic and biologically productive system, which provides unique habitats. Based on the volume of fresh water flow coming from the Everglades, the salinity of the Florida Bay is varies in different wet and dry seasons. Therefore, in this area, the flow of freshwater from the Everglades determines the conditions in Florida ...
متن کاملSeasonal and Long-term Trends in the Water Quality of Florida Bay (1989-l 997)
Analysis of 6 yr of monthly water quality data was performed on three distinct zones of Florida Bay: the eastern bay, central bay, and western bay. Each zone was analyzed for trends at hrtra-annual (seasonal), interammal (oscillation), and long-term (monotonic) scales. The variables TON, TOC, temperature, and TN : TF’ ratio had seasonal maxhna in the summer rainy season; APA and Chl a, indicato...
متن کاملExploring the relationship between land use and surface water quality using multivariate statistics in arid and semi-arid regions
The relative impacts of different types of land use on the surface water quality are yet to be ascertained and quantified. In this paper, the influence of different types of land use on surface water quality is investigated. Rain events samples from different land use in the central plateau, Iran, were analyzed for major ions. Statistical analyses were employed to examine the statistical relati...
متن کاملSatellite Derived Water Quality Observations Are Related to River Discharge and Nitrogen Loads in Pensacola Bay, Florida
Relationships between satellite-derived water quality variables and river discharges, concentrations and loads of nutrients, organic carbon, and sediments were investigated over a 9-year period (2003–2011) in Pensacola Bay, Florida, USA. These analyses were conducted to better understand which river forcing factors were the primary drivers of estuarine variability in several water quality varia...
